Another Wednesday, another episode of the Tom Ferry show!
This week Tom Ferry brought renowned content creator, self-made entrepreneur, and storyteller, Iris Chen, onto the show to talk about what it takes to find your purpose in your career.
Iris Chen got her start by creating online videos while she was in high school, however it wasn't until she went to college that she realized that she could create her own brand using social media.
"I saw people putting out content, whether that was a makeup channel, a fitness channel, or a real estate channel. I saw people putting out a blog, but in video form, and how you could create a business out of it."
After seeing the successes of others, Iris decided that she wanted to create a name for herself based on her own interests. That was when she created her own health cooking channel on YouTube. Soon after, she fell in love with being in front of the camera and knew exactly what her purpose was.
This inspired her to pursue a major in broadcast journalism and she set out to find the best school in the country for just that. She came across USC as her school of choice based on the stellar reputation of the broadcast journalism program and that was the beginning of her career as a professional storyteller. Or so she thought.
After a week in the USC program, Iris dropped out because she felt that the traditional route of broadcast journalism didn't fit her goals in this new age of social content creation.
Fast forward a few years, Iris graduated college through a biology program with a focus on health and nutrition, her following on her nutrition channel has grown at a steady pace, and she has fallen in love with creating and editing videos.
However, everything in her career was about to change with one video.
Find out who saw this video and how this changed Iris' career by watching the fascinating 14-minute interview above.
